The kidneys are vital organs that filter the blood and remove waste from the body in the form of urine. When minerals and salts present in urine accumulate excessively and form crystals, they are known as kidney stones.
Main Causes of Kidney Stones
- Dehydration: Not drinking enough water makes the urine concentrated, which leads to the crystallization of minerals.
- Excessive Salt and Sugar Intake: High amounts of salt and sugar increase the risk of stone formation.
- High Protein or Oxalate-Rich Foods: Foods such as spinach, chocolate, nuts, and seeds can contribute to stone formation.
- Genetic Factors: If someone in your family has had kidney stones, your risk may be higher.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) or Other Health Problems.
Common Symptoms of Kidney Stones
- Severe pain in the back, lower abdomen, or sides.
- Burning sensation or pain during urination.
- Blood in the urine.
- Frequent urge to urinate.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Dark-colored or foul-smelling urine.
Prevention Tips for Kidney Stones
- Drink plenty of water – at least 8–10 glasses a day.
- Eat a balanced and light diet – limit foods rich in oxalates.
- Reduce salt and sugar intake.
- Increase the intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Get regular health check-ups.
Ayurveda and Home Remedies
In Ayurveda, several herbs are used to dissolve kidney stones and cleanse the urinary tract, such as:
- Gokhru, Varuna, Pashanbhed, and Kulthi dal (horse gram).
- Drinking lemon water and coconut water is also considered beneficial.
When to Consult a Doctor?
If the pain is unbearable, you have a fever, or there is persistent blood in the urine, consult a doctor immediately. Timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent the stone from growing further.
