Piles (Hemorrhoids) is a common but troublesome condition that occurs due to swelling or the formation of inflamed lumps in the veins of the anus and rectum. In simple terms, it is known as “Arsh” or “Bawasir” in Hindi. The problem often arises due to chronic constipation, prolonged sitting or standing, unhealthy eating habits, or pregnancy.
Types of Piles
There are two main types of piles:
- Internal Piles – These occur inside the anus and are usually painless but may cause bleeding.
- External Piles – These occur outside the anus, near the skin, causing pain, swelling, and itching.
Causes of Piles
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea.
- Excess consumption of spicy and oily foods.
- Low-fiber diet.
- Obesity and lack of physical activity.
- Increased pressure during pregnancy.
- Sitting on the toilet for a long time or straining during bowel movements.
Symptoms of Piles
- Pain or burning sensation during bowel movements.
- Bleeding from the anus.
- Lumps or swelling around the anus.
- Itching or irritation near the anus.
- Feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation.
Prevention and Home Remedies
- High-fiber diet: Include fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and salads.
- Drink plenty of water: Consume at least 8–10 glasses of water daily.
- Exercise: Engage in 30 minutes of yoga or walking every day.
- Warm Sitz Bath: Sitting in lukewarm water for 10–15 minutes provides relief.
- Avoid oily, spicy, and fast foods.
- Prevent constipation: Consume papaya, lettuce, and psyllium husk (Isabgol).
Treatment
- In the early stages, Ayurvedic medicines, creams, or supplements can be helpful.
- In severe cases, doctors may recommend surgery or laser treatment.
